Change Order Log.
Type your change orders, or open the CSV you saved last time. See each one colored by status and days out, what has changed your contract sum, and which ones you billed before they were signed. Download it as a CSV for Excel or Google Sheets, or print it. Free, no account, and nothing you type is stored or sent: the CSV and the printout are made in your browser, and a saved CSV is read there too.
Example change orders, not a real job
Every name and number in the example is made up.
Change orders
One row per change order. Client means whoever you bill: the owner, or the GC if you are the sub. Sub means a change to a sub’s PO. Answered is the date it was signed, sent back, or withdrawn. On a Price to Follow row, type your rough number in Amount. A Pending row with no amount and no days added reads as Price to Follow. Nothing is stored, so a reload clears the log. Download the CSV to keep it, and open it here next time.

Fix these first (1)
- Item CO 7 came from a change order that is not executed yet (Pending). Billing unauthorised work is what gets a whole requisition rejected.

- Yellow: Pending, out more than 5 days.
- Red: Pending, out more than 10.
- Green: Approved.
- Blue: Revise.
- No color: Price to Follow, Void, Pending not yet sent, and Pending out 5 days or less.
Days out counts from the sent date to your client’s answer (for Void, the date it was withdrawn), or to the as-of date while it is still open. With no answer date, an Approved, Revise or Void row shows no count rather than one that runs on to today.
What has changed your contract sum
| Original contract sum | 486,000.00 |
| Approved additions (1) | 4,180.00 |
| Approved deductions (1) | (2,350.00) |
| Net change by change orders (G702 line 2) | 1,830.00 |
| Contract sum to date (original plus line 2) | 487,830.00 |
Days added by approved change orders: 1
Not included above
- Pending: 2, totalling 16,475.00
- Revise: 1, totalling 6,840.00, back with you
- Price to Follow: 1, no price yet
- Void: 1, at 0.00
- Days asked for, not yet approved: 2
Before your final pay app, get each open owner change order signed, withdrawn, or set aside with a reason. The AsBuilt billing desk refuses a final while one is open.
Sub change orders
These change what your POs commit, not your contract sum, so they are never in line 2.
- Approved: 0, adding 0.00 to what your POs commit
- Pending: 1, totalling 2,640.00
Waiting on an answer (2)
- CO 7 has been with your client 14 days without an answer, past the 10 day mark.
- CO 5 has been with your client 8 days without an answer, past the 5 day mark.
Back with you (1)
- CO 4 came back for revision 12 days ago. The next move is yours: re-price it and send the revision under the same number, or withdraw it and mark it Void.
Notes (1)
- CO 6: $9,000.00 is shown as a rough number, not a price, and stays out of every total until you mark it Pending.

Questions about construction change order logs
What goes on a change order log?
One row per change order: the number, what changed and why, who it goes to, the amount, any days it adds, the date it was raised, the date you sent it, the date your client answered, and where it stands. Where it stands is one of five words: Price to Follow, Pending, Revise, Approved or Void. A fixed list means everyone on the job reads it the same way.
What is the difference between a change order form and a change order log?
A change order form is the one document your client signs for one change; the AIA G701 is one such form. The log lists every change order on the job and where each one stands.
Why log a change before it has a price?
Because the change happened before the price did. A potential change order, often called a PCO, is a change you have found but not yet priced or had signed. Log it the day you find it, as Price to Follow, so it has a number and a date from the start. Your contract may set a deadline for notice of a change, so check it. On a Price to Follow row, type your rough number in Amount: the log shows it with a tilde and keeps it out of every total.
Which change orders change my contract sum?
On this log, only change orders your client has signed. The AIA G701 change order form says on its face that it is not valid until the architect, contractor and owner sign it, and the AsBuilt billing desk puts only signed owner change orders on line 2 of the G702, net change by change orders. Contract sum to date is your original contract sum plus those signed change orders, with credits taken off: line 3 of the G702. Pending, Revise and Price to Follow are listed beside the total and never added in. A sub change order changes what that sub’s PO commits, not what your client owes you, so this page keeps it apart. If a change order is on your pay app before it is signed, this page flags it, as the Pay App Check does.
Should a rejected or withdrawn change order stay on the log?
Yes. If it was withdrawn, mark it Void. It reads $0.00, keeps what it was worth beside it, and keeps its number, because a withdrawn number stays used. If your client sends one back with comments, or turns it down, mark it Revise: the next move is yours. Re-price it and send the revision under the same number, or withdraw it and mark it Void. A log that keeps every number shows what happened to each one.
How long should a change order sit with my client?
Your contract may set a time to answer. This log uses one rule: a Pending change order turns yellow once it has been out more than 5 days and red once it passes 10, counted from the date you sent it. The count stops on the date your client answers. Price to Follow never turns yellow or red, because an unpriced change order is waiting on you, not on your client. The colors are a reason to pick up the phone, not a legal deadline.
Can I download it for Excel, Google Sheets or as a PDF?
Yes. Download CSV saves a file that opens in Excel or Google Sheets. It carries each color as a word in its own column, because a CSV cannot hold cell colors. For a PDF, choose Print, then Save as PDF. Open the full CSV here next time to see the new days out; the client’s copy leaves out sub change orders, your notes and the pay app column. The blank template has the same columns and no rows, to fill in a spreadsheet and open here.
A change order log built on the rules of the change order desk in AsBuilt: the same five words, the same color rule, and the billing desk’s rule that only signed owner change orders count toward line 2 of the G702. It is not legal or accounting advice; your contract decides what counts, when notice is due and how long your client has to answer. G701 and G702 are documents of the American Institute of Architects; this page is not affiliated with or endorsed by AIA.
The log adds up but the signed copies live in someone’s inbox? That is what the Read is for.
